MOLE ARMCHAIR (1961)

The furniture was commissioned by photographer Otto Stupakoff. He wanted a sofa in his studio that would spread like a sultan and Sergio Rodrigues responded with a robust, comfortable sofa that expressed Brazil in characteristics and identity – the Mole sofa.
The armchair is a reduction of the sofa made in 1957. In 1961 it was published by the designer to participate in the Cantú International Furniture Competition, in Italy. There he won first place and his glory, competing among 438 models from 27 countries.
“At Poltrona Mole you don’t sit, you relax”, wrote journalist Sérgio Augusto. In a 1975 book, critic and designer Clement Meadmore called it “one of the 30 most important headquarters of the 20th century.” The Mole armchair is also part of the design collection at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
