Discover the Green House in Tottenham: An Ecological Masterpiece

The Green House, located on a quiet side street in the Clyde Circus Conservation Area, Tottenham, is a remarkable example of sustainable architecture and innovative design. Surrounded by historical remnants such as stables, orchards, and a small reforested woodland, this residence reimagines the concept of a domestic greenhouse, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor spaces.

Nature-Inspired Design

The Green House project celebrates the natural history and greenery of the area. The highlight is a central riad-style atrium, top-lit, connecting all living spaces and bringing natural light to the heart of the house. This atrium not only illuminates but also cools the house on hot days, thanks to natural ventilation provided by solar glass windows with temperature and rain sensors.

Flexible and Sustainable Spaces

The living spaces are designed with an open plan, enhancing the sense of spaciousness and flexibility. Curtains around the atrium allow the dining space to transform into an impressive double-height hall while offering acoustic absorption. The house’s structure, made of cross-laminated timber (CLT), is efficient and sustainable. The material is exposed, showcasing the wood’s growth rings, and the internal doors, also made of CLT, are designed to avoid the use of jambs and architraves.

Sustainability and Energy Efficiency

The Green House is heated by an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) and features photovoltaic panels on the roof, achieving an energy consumption of only 29 kWh/m²/year and 410 kgCO2/m² over the building’s lifecycle. These figures are well below the RIBA Climate Challenge 2030 targets, highlighting a strong commitment to sustainability.

Connection to Nature

The south-facing front facade is planted with bamboo and equipped with sliding polycarbonate screens, referencing the site’s former greenhouses. These plants and screens soften daylight, providing privacy and solar protection. All house windows offer views of the sky or surrounding greenery, creating a sense of openness and connection with the natural environment.

Awards and Recognitions

The Green House has received numerous awards, including:
