The Spanish Chair by Børge Mogensen, introduced in 1958, is a renowned example of his functional and robust design philosophy, deeply rooted in traditional craftsmanship. Inspired by medieval Spanish furniture, particularly a type of chair Mogensen encountered during a trip to Spain, this design embodies his appreciation for durable, long-lasting materials and simple, yet expressive, forms. The Chair is characterized by its solid oak frame and wide armrests, which serve a dual purpose: comfort and practicality, as they can also function as a surface for placing a book or a glass. The seat and back are made from thick saddle leather, which is adjustable using straps, creating a balance between the rigidity of the oak and the flexibility of the leather. Over time, the leather develops a patina, adding character to the chair.
